Living The Dream

Ever say hello to someone and then proceed with, “How are you”? “Living the dream”, they say! Okay, so seriously….What in the actual fuck does that mean? I smile and wonder what their dreams actually are. The phrase is always said in a sarcastic manner. Are you stuck in a job you do not want to be in? Do you hate your spouse? Tell me….please….I am asking for a friend.

I hear that line on the daily. I am not knocking it. I have never in my life said it myself, however I am always wondering if I am really living the life that I have always wanted and dreamed of. It’s a cliche, I think. What did I want, anyway? I always just wanted to be happy. Then I realized as I matured as an adult that it’s humanly impossible to be happy all of the time. Think back to when you were a child. When I was a child I wanted to be a duck. I kid you not. I think it was even on the news back in the day. I was in our neighborhood park with my mother and I remember something was going on. I think they were cleaning the lake. The local channel news was there. I told them I wanted to be a duck so I can swim in the lake. I guess it’s safe to say my dreams never came true. I hope this made you laugh. Our dreams as children are never really the same as we get older.

Really. Is life made up of dreams? As an adult today I sometimes wonder so many things. Firstly, if I did not listen to my english professor back in the day I would be in my “dream job” right now, probably as the executive writer of some big huge publishing firm. I find myself thinking about going back to college to fulfill the classes I’d need. Somehow life took me in a completely different direction. I definitely would not call it my “dream” job, but it’s pretty okay and I am happy there for the most part. I am fulfilled.

So. Am I living the dream?  I am living a life of fulfillment.

What I am living is a beautiful life that I have created throughout my never-ending journey in becoming fulfilled. Living the dream is all about fulfillment. I truly believe that. We all have dreams and aspirations. We wind up on different paths along the way that wound up happening because of the choices we made. Living the dream is a phrase to help us along the way. All in all, it really does not matter what we think our life is suppose to look like. Life is all about accepting what it is and finding ways to find fulfillment in everything we do.

I am going to share a secret with you. Happiness and being fulfilled go hand in hand. Although it’s humanly impossible to be happy all the time we can find ways to create happiness in the moments when we aren’t-we find fulfillment. There’s always different perspectives to hold during the times we are not as happy as we’d like to be and sarcastically “living the dream”. Being happy is an emotion. Feeling fulfilled is more of a disciplined daily routine. We must do things to fulfill our soul in order for happiness to evolve.

Until next time…
