A Small Town Girl (Part 7)
The chickens were getting big and they had started giving us eggs. There was a rooster in the mix and we decided to keep him to be the protector. Which, he was doing a great job so far. They are all still with us. I’ve heard that predators do come from time to time and there’s not much you can do about it. Just thinking about it makes me very sad. The kids thought it was the coolest thing ever to have fresh eggs everyday and they also think of them as their pets. They help take very good care of them all. They always wanted chickens where we lived back home. Our property wasn’t big enough and our town had rules we needed to follow. I wouldn’t have wanted to keep them in such a small space anyway. It’s not fair to them.
My gardens were thriving and we were getting enormous harvests everyday. Between that and our eggs we barely had to go to the grocery store. It was lovely! I even started baking our own fresh bread of all different kinds. I was getting really good at this. I noticed our diets started to change drastically. We have been been eating a lot more plants. I noticed a change in the children. Processed foods were not a thing in our home anymore. Everything we ate pretty much came from our own yard and what I baked.
We were heading out for the day. A bunch of the other mommas in our neighborhood planned a nice day out. They were always so good at doing all the planning. I, on the other hand was not. I left it to others to plan. I’m a fly by the wind type of girl, always was. If you asked me what I’m doing tomorrow the answer was always, “I don’t know, We will see”. I sometimes wonder if it’s a good thing. Being that I try really hard to stay in the moment and not think too far ahead, I’ll go with a yes. It works for me. And, I can see that the kids have become a fan of this as well. I think it saves a lot of unnecessary thinking and worrying.
Lunches were packed along with bathing suits and towels. I packed a few extras of everything just in case someone forgot something. The kids were all awake now and everyone came running down. BreaThey all looked at the bags that were packed and were really excited about our day. I reminded them to bring any games or toys that they’d like to bring and to leave their iPads home. I am a firm believer in limiting screen time, especially when we are outdoors and hangin gout with friends. It does something weird to them that I can’t quite explain. Rather than try I’m just going to stick with what I’m feeling about today’s culture and what society is doing to the youth of our children. It boggles my mind to see a group of people staring down at their phones and other electronic devices. I guess you can say it’s a pet-peeve of mine.
It was about 11am and it was time to get going. I offered to pick up one of the mommas and her two kids being she and her husband only have one car and he needed to work. Thats seems to be pretty common here. One car per family. I was grateful to help out being we had the truck and we had more than enough room. I was always happy to help someone in need. It was always my way of giving back. The universe always gives back more, that is how it works. I teach my children the same. Kindness and having enough love for others to go around is all I have ever wanted for them.
Until next time…
Love & Light, Always!
